"Where... where am I? Is this the aftergame?"
A soft voice laughed from the darkness. "Oh, by no means. Let me switch on the light..."
He rubbed his head. "I was supposed to be dead. I jumped."
As the light went on, he saw a tall figure dressed in purple and gold step closer. "W... why... Happy Mask Salesguy?"
"Indeed I am!" The mask maker nodded. "You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you? Just why would you want to take your life? Trade the joy of existence for mute, blind eternity?"
"I have had enough. I am no one! Why would you care?" He felt his chest. "Stitches. Thank you, of course, but I didn't need those. One failed attempt won't dissuade me."
Happy Mask Salesguy slowly approached and sat down beside him. "Why would you think you're no one? You are someone. A Shy Guy. What's your name?"
"I have no name."
"You must have one. Well, I admit you look rather generic, but why not make that the starting point for developing an identity? How would you like to be called 'Generic Shy Guy'?"
No answer came.
"Or, excuse me for extrapolating, 'Absolutely Generic Shy Guy'? This is bound to turn heads. 'AGS Guy' for short."
"No one cares anyway."
The mask maker reached out and grabbed the other Shy Guy's shoulder. "I care. I care, yes? I do. I know what it's like! No one cares about ME, let me tell you. I'm always the one with the exorbitant price tags, with the contracts from Main Guy that you have to sign, custom masks take too long, 'Happy Mask Salesguy is a jerk'! No one's ever nice to me! And, look, I'm still enjoying myself. You can too."
"Really? You... no one likes you?" The other Shy Guy's voice wavered. "But... you saved me. You are very nice."
"That's lost on most. You know, how about we become friends?"
"F... friends? Oh... I haven't had friends... for so long..."
Happy Mask Salesguy stood up. "Yes, friends! Now get up and forget taking your life. And think of a name. It'd be difficult for a friend to address you if you haven't got a name."
"I think I'll go by AGS Guy, as you suggested. Thank you."
"You're welcome. If you really want to thank me for saving you, buy a new mask! You get a discount!"
AGS Guy yelped. "A new mask. You mean..." He touched the place where his mask would be. Nothing was there.
"Yes, I am sorry... it broke when you fell. I couldn't repair it..."
Recovering from the shock, AGS Guy realized... "I have no money. Absolutely nothing."
"That's a conundrum..." The mask maker pondered. "Wait. You get one for free." He rushed off into another room. "You must understand I can't give away quality masks since Main Guy keeps track of them... but here's one I did in my spare time that would even accentuate, in an ironic way, your new name. Here we go."

Once again, Artemendo, your combination of stunning artwork, well-thought out character design, and beautifully emotional storytelling has me flabbergasted. O.o Two outcasts thrown together, both unappreciated, but each with an entirely different outlook on life... and lives are changed, or forged. It’s amazing because you don’t even have to know the whole background story here-- the excerpt just manages to speak volumes by itself.

I have to add as well that your atmosphere effects are really something else— it’s remarkable how such bright, clean characters can fit so well into such a foreboding and ominous setting. But then... with the Majora’s Mask connections, perhaps that disconcertion is all too appropriate. ^^

Thank you very much!

Heh heh, thank you!

Thank you so, so much for this great comment, Atticus. It's comments like these that make me keep creating more art!

Oh, I feel like I'm being assaulted by compliments here! Well, I at least tried to make the excerpt me more or less self-explaining. I am very happy you found it that good, or moving. And yes, the fate of both is changed - but later in the story, the party has to fight Happy Mask Salesguy, and besides crying and hiding during the battle, AGS Guy hardly holds up his end of the deal.

Heh, yes, that character is just one big Majora's Mask reference - his role as both friend and foe in the story and what happens to him in the end differ greatly from the original Happy Mask Salesman, though. And that's by far not the darkest moment in the game - the backstories of other characters are quite more disturbing, to say nothing of the actual game events.

Again, thank you so extremely much!

Brilliant. I'm quite fond of your style, here, and the added story only adds to the brilliance. The Happy Mask Salesguy reminds me of Dimentio next to the Happy Mask Salesman for some reason. But anyway, awesome. Keep up the great work.

Thank you very, very much. The Happy Mask Salesguy's mask is supposed to resemble a Phanto with the colors reversed, but now that you say it, Dimentio's mask does look a bit like a Phanto, too!
I will try to make more like these, thank you again!
:iconmariofan9:
You're welcome. Now that you mention it, yes, the mask does look a lot like a Phanto. :)
